The danger in the Metaverse has been rediscovered. Again, related to acts of sexual harassment, even a 13-year-old girl was threatened with rape.
Reporting from the BBC, Friday (2/25/2022), this finding was found by researchers from BBC News who disguised themselves as a 13-year-old girl and received threats of rape from an adult male.
In their report, the researchers pointed to the Metaverse with lots of sexual material, racist insults and threats of rape.
These findings, confirmed by Andy Burrows of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPC), a child protection agency.
Burrows states that the Metaverse world is a toxic combination of risks. By design, Metaverse has failed to protect its users.
“It is extraordinary that children are faced with a completely inappropriate experience. It's really, really dangerous," Burrows said.
“This is a dangerous product by design, because negligence just keeps happening. The developers of Metaverse have learned little from mistakes. We see Metaverse launched without considering user security," he added.
Metaverse itself is a digital space that is presented to enrich the gaming experience and can be accessed using a virtual reality (VR) headset.
However, now Metaverse has undergone wider innovation, not only for playing games but also for concerts or other entertainment.
Metaverse continues to be campaigned by Facebook. In addition to developing a VR headset, the tech giant made by Mark Zuckerberg also claims to continue to improve security there.
Zuckerberg thinks Metaverse can be the future of the internet. Therefore Metaverse needs to be developed.
