A father uses a signal jammer to get his children to stop using social media but manages to turn off the entire city's internet accidentally.
Reporting from ZDNet, Sunday (2/20/2022), the French Agence Nationale des Fréquences, the organization responsible for managing radio frequencies in France, received a strange complaint.
Detected if there is a decrease in the signal for an unknown cause and affect residents' telephone and internet services in the city of Messanges, France.
According to ANFR, one odd detail stands out in the report; the service is consistently cut off from midnight to roughly around 3 am every day.
While the residents were asleep, a member of the Toulouse Regional Services from the ANFR began investigating. Their spectrum analyzer equipment finally revealed a jammer was in use.
The waves emitted by the device lead to a house. The next day, one of the residents claimed responsibility and claimed he had purchased a multi-band jammer to prevent his teenager from going online at night without permission.
The father claims that his son has been addicted to social media and has often surfed the internet since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The use of the jammer is meant to stop them from secretly using their smartphone to go online at bedtime.
However, the jammer also managed to break connectivity for other residents and neighboring cities.
"Because he wanted to ban internet use in his home, he applied the same punishment to his entire neighborhood," said ANFR.
The problem is that the use of jammers in France is illegal, and as a result, the man faces a maximum fine of around IDR 487 million and even imprisonment of up to six months.
