Facebook Employees Now Have New Nicknames

Facebook has changed its name to Meta since the end of 2021. According to the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, the name change is done for a great purpose that the company is building, namely Metafeverse.

Along with changing the company's name to Meta, Zuckerberg also changes the nickname of his company employee for "Metamates". Previously, employees on Facebook were referred to as "Facebookers".

Zuckerberg announced a change in nickname to employees at the company's public meeting on Tuesday (2/15/2022).

"Meta, Metamates, I am all about having good service for our company and our mission," said Zuckerberg at the meeting.

Zuckerberg also explained that the change in the name of the Facebooker to Metamates reflects the new values ​​that Meta has adopted.

After announcing it internally, Zuck also announced a name change through his personal Facebook account.

"Now is the right time to update our values ​​and our cultural operating system," Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page.

"It's about the sense of responsibility that we have for success with us and each other as a team and about keeping the company and keeping each other."

Before settling in the nickname Metamates, Meta consulted with Douglas Hofstadter, the Professor of Cognitive Sciences at the University of Indiana, the author of the Pulitzer Gödel Prize winner book, Escher, Bach: Eternal gold braids.

In his email, Hofstadter said that he initially suggested "teammates" for the nickname of Meta employees because the word still contained Meta Anagram. But he also includes metamate as an alternative.

However, the professor did not know whether Meta meta finally adopted metamate as a nickname for the company employee.

Metamates Reap Satire.

Meta combination with metamate according to the sound. However, new nicknames for Meta employees have attracted criticism and Satire, even from their company employees.

A Twitter user said Metamates sounded like a date application from Metaverse. This is because pairs in English mean partners or partners, so they can also be attributed to dating.

Meanwhile, other netizens say metamate words are too similar to elementary schools. "Metamame reports to a metatorium for metameeting," Twitter users said.

Other users joke about lunch with their friends in Meta. "I have lunch with meta (metamate) friends," Read Tweet.

Facebook head technology officer Andrew Bosworth also tweet about metamate. He said that Metamame refers to maritime phrases, such as friends of the ship (friendship) used by Instagram.
