Nvidia confirmed that a cyber attack hit its company. The graphics chip maker is still investigating the incident, although some reports suggest that the US company was the victim of a ransomware attack.
"We are currently investigating the incident. Our business and commercial activities are continuing without interruption," said Nvidia spokesman Hector Marinez, quoted from The Verge, Monday (2/28/2022).
He also said he was still evaluating the impact of the attack. However, the company has not provided additional information to date.
Previously, Nvidia was reported to have had a cyberattack that attacked the company's internal systems over the past two days. But it is not yet known whether any data was deleted or stolen during the incident.
Then on Saturday, dark web intelligence firm DarkTracer tweeted that the cyberattack on Nvidia was carried out by a ransomware syndicate called Lapsus$. It is also known that they were involved in a cyberattack on Portugal's most prominent TV station.
DarkTracer said that the Lapsus$ group leaked data claimed to be hashed passwords for Nvidia employees. They also get other data such as source code and information related to GPU RTX.
Then it was reported that Lapsus$ still has some stolen data from Nvidia to be leaked to the public immediately.
Initially, the information suggested that the cyberattack against Nvidia might be related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But so far, there is no evidence that the two are related.
If Nvidia or other US companies are the targets of cyber attacks from Russia, Uncle Sam's country will likely retaliate.
"If Russia targets a cyber attack on our company, our critical infrastructure, we are ready to retaliate," said US President Joe Biden.
